The city of Bremen is gearing up for the 989th edition of the Ischa Freimaak folk festival, set to commence on October 18th. This year, the festival promises a blend of tradition and innovation, offering visitors an enhanced experience.

Unlike previous years, the festival will begin earlier than usual, giving attendees more time to enjoy the festivities. A key part of this year's event is the introduction of larger and more modern Roland figures, symbolizing Bremen’s heritage with a fresh look.

To mark the official opening at 4 PM, Kristina Vogt, the Senator for Economics, will cut a ribbon at the festival grounds. Meanwhile, the big and little Roland will travel on a historic tram to the Bürgerweide at the same time, adding a nostalgic and unique transport experience for attendees.

The official opening ceremony will take place in a new central location in Bremen's city center, making it more accessible and prominent. The ceremony will see the President of the Senate, Antje Grotheer, and the Bremen chimney sweeps presenting the large Freimarkt heart to the stone Roland.

At 3 PM, the market rights from 1035 will be read in front of the stone Roland, followed by the little Roland hoisting the flags on a historic tram. At 4 PM, Kristina Vogt will hand over the market rights to the market traders at the Bürgerweide.

The traditional three cannon shots will signal the start of the Freimarkt at 4 PM, with lights turning on in the shops and merry-go-rounds starting to spin. For the first time, fanfare signals will ring out from the Senate windows at 2:30 PM.

The historic spectacle around the "Little Freimarkt" will begin at 3 PM, with the new Freimarkt ambassador, the Bremen Roland, setting off on his journey at 2:30 PM, accompanied by a young Bremen child on horseback.

For the next 17 days, flags on BSAG buses and trams throughout Bremen will indicate that it's Freimarkt time, marking the city's celebration of this cherished tradition. The Ischa Freimaak promises to be an unforgettable experience, combining the charm of tradition with the excitement of new elements, ensuring greater visitor engagement.

Visitors of the Ischa Freimaak can experience the blending of tradition and innovation in their lifestyles at home and garden, as the festival organizes various events showcasing modern versions of traditional elements. For instance, the newly created, larger Roland figures represent Bremen’s heritage with a fresh look, symbolizing the transformation in the city's lifestyle and home-and-garden aesthetics.
