I can't resist dragging Steve, my man, on craft store errands. Sure, it takes forever, but I don't mind because he's the mastermind behind our unique Halloween decor ideas. This time, he outdid himself with an apothecary jar.
We stumbled upon this jar and immediately, Steve's creative juices started flowing. "Ever think about what we could do with this jar?" he asked. "Not really, but I'm all ears," I replied casually.
The rest is history! Here's Steve's genius DIY skull display that's sure to spook up your Halloween decor.
The Spooky Skull Jar
Here's what you'll need:
- Apothecary jar - we used an 18.5" jar
- Skull - check out the Halloween decor section for a fitting find
- Decorative pebbles or stones - usually found in the floral section
- FolkArt Multi-Surface Paint, Pure Black
- 1/4" stencil tape
- Paintbrush
- LED votive (for the skull's interior)
Once we settled on the jar, we ventured into the Halloween decor aisle and found our skull match made in heaven. It fit perfectly within the jar with a removable back skull and a votive nestled inside. However, he wasn't spooky enough for our liking.
Enter: a touch of paint! All you need is to slather the skull with black paint and then wipe away the excess with paper towels. You can adjust the level of spookiness based on your preference.
Now, let's get creative and add a little flair to the top knob (if you'd like). Wrap some 1/4" stencil tape around it, then paint it with your multi-surface paint. Remove the tape instantly and let it dry.
The grand finale is filling the jar with decorative pebbles or stones. Place the skull atop the pebbles (with the LED votive inside), and voila! Your skull display is complete. The glow from the inside of the skull is downright perfect for Halloween.
