Dizzying incident at the Thuringia racetrack - Competitor plunges from the sky

In the heart of Thuringia, Germany, hikers like Martin Lotz are sharing the trails with a growing population of Eurasian lynxes. These elusive wild cats, known for their shy nature, are increasingly common in the region's forests [1].

On July 11, Martin Lotz had an unforgettable encounter with a lynx while hiking on the Rennsteig. As he walked with his dog, the lynx appeared in the middle of the path, just a few meters in front of his dog [2].

When encountering a lynx, it is crucial to remain calm, avoid sudden movements, and keep your distance. Do not approach or attempt to feed the animal. Instead, back away slowly, giving the lynx space to avoid feeling threatened [3].

Lynxes are generally not aggressive to humans, but their behaviour can change when they perceive a dog as an "unwelcome guest" [4]. In this encounter, Lotz's dog returned to him when the lynx appeared, and the lynx initially did not move aside [2].

If you happen to encounter a lynx while mushroom picking, do not try to approach or pet them. The lynx mother is likely nearby, and it is essential to respect their space for your safety and the animal’s welfare [5].

Additional guidance for safely encountering a lynx while hiking includes:

  • Do not run: Running can trigger a chase response.
  • Maintain eye contact without staring aggressively.
  • Make yourself appear larger if the lynx seems curious or approaches.
  • Make noise calmly to alert the lynx of your presence.
  • Avoid hiking alone in known lynx habitats if concerned.

During the breeding season, from May to September, extra caution is advised when encountering lynxes [3].

Lotz was able to take a photo of the lynx before it jumped onto a rock beside the path and observed him and his dog [2]. This encounter was a very impressive experience for Lotz.

If you have an encounter with a lynx while hiking in Thuringia or nearby areas, you can report it to Nabu-Thuringia at [email protected] [6].

Remember, these shy and elusive creatures are fascinating to observe, but they should be handled with caution for the safety of both humans and the lynxes themselves.

While exploring the Thuringian forests, one might stumble upon the elusive Eurasian lynx, a fascinating wildlife sight for individuals interested in home-and-garden or outdoor-living. It's important to handle such encounters with caution, maintaining a respectful distance and adhering to safety guidelines, as these shy cats may perceive dogs as threats.
