With Milongas galore, concerts, and thematic tours every now and then, this city's going to set the stage ablaze. Why the sudden South American flair? Well, that's history for ya! The roots of the bandoneon—the soulful yet enigmatic instrument that commands the limelight in tango music—can be traced back to the very cradle of this city. In the 19th century, Carl Friedrich Uhlig, a local genius, concocted the precursor to this melodious marvel, the concertina. Over time, it was revised and refined into the bandoneon right here in good old Saxony.

To give you a glimpse of the impact, during Saxony's golden age of bandoneon production, tens of thousands of these beauties were exported to South America, finding their way into the heart of the Argentine tango. Even today, Saxon instrument makers keep the tradition alive, crafting these fascinating instruments.

With its stint as the European Capital of Culture 2025, Chemnitz isn't just celebrating the past; it's rekindling a love affair with the Southern hemisphere. The "Moving Sounds" program underscores this commitment, uniting Chemnitz's industrial legacy with the pulsating rhythm of the Tango, inviting artists, musicians, and tango aficionados from both continents to dance together. This isn't just a dance of the past, but a collaboration that straddles modern times, as Saxony continues to shape and influence the global music landscape.

In line with its role as the European Capital of Culture 2025, Community policy Chemnitz's "Moving Sounds" program seeks to intertwine its industrial legacy with the dynamic rhythm of the tango, bridging continents and fostering a unique blend of cultures.
