Customs Raids Expose Wage Cheats in German Hotels and Restaurants

On Friday, September 19, 2025, the Customs Financial Control of Illegal Employment (FKS) carried out nationwide inspections in the hotel and restaurant industry. The Main Customs Office Magdeburg led the operations in the Salzlandkreis, Harz, Mansfeld-Südharz, and cities like Halle (Saale) and Dessau-Roßlau.

The FKS inspected 132 individuals from 35 companies, uncovering 48 cases that required further investigation. The inspections aimed to ensure compliance with the Minimum Wage Act (MiLoG), which applies to the large and employment-intensive hotel and catering sector. They checked for adherence to minimum wage regulations, social security obligations, and illegal employment.

The inspections found indications of non-compliance with the general minimum wage of 12.82 euros per hour, contribution evasion, and benefit fraud. As a result, 11 criminal proceedings and 13 administrative offence proceedings were initiated for violations of alien law regulations.

The FKS inspections highlight the importance of enforcing minimum wage laws and preventing illegal employment in the hotel and catering industry. The findings underscore the need for continued vigilance and strict enforcement to protect workers' rights and ensure fair competition.
