Foreign Couples Refunded Over Three Million Euros in Unlawful Wedding Charges in Copenhagen
In a surprising turn of events, the municipality of Copenhagen, Denmark, has announced that it will refund a total of 23 million Danish Kroner (approximately three million Euros) to around 12,000 foreign couples who were unlawfully charged for their civil marriages between 2018 and 2025.
The unlawful practice, which has now been stopped, was confirmed by the Culture Department of Copenhagen City. According to Culture Mayor Mia Nyegaard, the situation is "truly unfortunate and regrettable."
Many of the affected couples may have come from Germany, where high requirements for marriages make Denmark a popular alternative. Copenhagen City Hall recorded a record number of 8,000 civil marriages last year, with 5,000 being for foreigners.
Foreigners who want to get married in Germany must generally provide a certificate of capacity to marry. However, if their home country does not issue such a document, they may be exempted, requiring several current documents, some of which may not be available to refugees. In contrast, Denmark's relatively liberal regulations for marriages make it a popular destination, similar to Las Vegas in the US.
