Construction initiates on Fresno's cutting-edge metropolitan senior facility
The city of Fresno is set to unveil its newest and most significant senior facility yet - the Fresno Senior Activity Center. Scheduled to open in summer 2027, this $41.1 million, 34,000 square-foot centre will be the largest of its kind in the state[1][3][5].
Located on a 4.5-acre site at 4343 N. Blackstone Ave. near Ashlan Avenue, the centre will be easily accessible to residents throughout the city, thanks to its proximity to Fresno Area Express (FAX) transit services[1][3].
The centre will boast a variety of key amenities, including gym and aerobic rooms, a pool, bocce ball and pickleball courts, a pavilion with barbecue areas, gardening spaces and walking paths, multi-use rooms for group activities, dedicated spaces for meal programs and wellness services, and facilities for arts, education, and fitness classes tailored specifically for senior citizens[1][4][5].
The project, which has been in the works for several years, is a testament to the city's commitment to its senior population. It was funded by a combination of Measure P sales tax, Community Development Block Grant funds, park impact fees, and the City’s General Fund[1][3][5].
The development of the centre was a grassroots effort in the senior community, which began in earnest in 2016. Local senior Josie Almeida has been a part of the project since 2023, and she currently utilizes a senior centre in Clovis[2][4].
Fresno City councilmember Tyler Maxwell stated that seniors had the final say in the planning of the senior centre, ensuring that it would meet the needs of Fresno’s senior population[4]. The city hopes the senior centre will create a sense of belonging for seniors across Fresno, and seniors living alone may find the centre to be a source of companionship[5].
The centre's aim is to improve the quality of life for seniors and potentially extend their lifespan. Once completed, it will be the first activity centre for seniors in the city, offering a vibrant hub for wellness, learning, and socializing[1][5]. All seniors with a valid ID will be welcome at the senior centre, making it a valuable resource for the community[1].
