Common Pear Tree Species: Overview of Popular Pear Varieties

In the world of fruit trees, three main varieties stand out: European, Asian, and hybrid pears. Each offers unique characteristics that make them suitable for different purposes.

Starting with European pears, these are the most common varieties you'll find in stores. They have a sweet, juicy quality that is much loved by many. Examples of European pear varieties include Bartlett, D'Anjou, and Bosc. Unlike their Asian counterparts, European pears do not ripen on the tree and need to be picked before they're ready to eat.

On the other hand, Asian pears ripen on the tree and can be eaten immediately. They are shaped like apples and have a crisper texture than European pears. Some well-known varieties of Asian pear include those not specified in this article. It's worth noting that Asian and hybrid pear tree types are harder against fire blight, a bacterial disease that European pear trees are vulnerable to.

Hybrid pears, often referred to as Oriental hybrids, are a mix of European and Asian pears. They ripen after they're picked, similar to European pears. Popular hybrid varieties include Comice, Seckel, Orient, and Kieffer. Unlike European pears, hybrids are hard, gritty fruits.

When it comes to ornamental pear trees, the Bradford pear is the most commonly grown variety in landscapes. However, flowering pear tree varieties are grown primarily for their attractive qualities rather than the fruit they produce.

For those interested in cherry trees, there are several well-known varieties. 'Vanda' is compact, highly productive, insect-friendly, and fruits early with large, tasty cherries. 'Canada Giant' is noted for its delicate, lush, fragrant blossom and hardiness. Varieties like 'Kobold', 'Morellenfeuer', 'Morina', 'Safir', 'Schattenmorelle', and 'Ungarische Traubige' differ in growth strength, self-fertility, disease resistance, and fruit characteristics. The choice of variety depends on garden size, disease resistance needs, and fruit qualities, among other factors.

As always, it's important to consider local climate and conditions when choosing a fruit tree variety. Commonly cultivated varieties may vary depending on the region.
