Coldplay's residency at Wembley Stadium is commemorated through a specially designed, fully yellow artwork that replicates the structure of the band's music, converting lyrics and melody into a visual navigation.
Celebrating Coldplay's 25th anniversary of their iconic hit "Yellow" and their record-breaking 10-night residency at Wembley Stadium, an outdoor installation called Yellow 25 has been created. This large-scale public art piece, located on the 58 steps of the Spanish Steps pedestrian link between Wembley Stadium and the OVO Arena in Wembley Park, London, is a visual and sensory experience that mirrors the melodic progression of the song.
The installation features 58 shades of yellow, progressing from pale, muted pastels at the bottom to deeper, more luminous golds at the top. Each colour has been matched to the musical notes of the song, with brighter hues for higher notes and richer tones for lower ones, using the Pantone Matching System colour standards. The result is a giant Pantone colour chip that transforms the stairs into an immersive tribute to the emotional journey of the song.
Produced in collaboration with Pantone, the installation was curated by Claudio Giambrone, the Head of Cultural Programming at Wembley Park. Jane Boddy, Creative Director at the Pantone Colour Institute, described the project as an exploration of how sound and colour can express the feeling of the song and engage all senses to create a new way to connect with the music.
Yellow 25 is open and free to experience 24/7 along the Spanish Steps, connecting two of London's iconic venues and serving as a tribute to one of Britain's greatest songs and its lasting cultural impact. After September 30, the installation will be recycled into practical items such as street cones, aligning with Coldplay's environmental ethics.
The installation invites people regardless of their familiarity with the song, offering a universal appeal that mirrors the themes of hope, warmth, devotion, and light embodied by the colour yellow and the song. Claudio Giambrone stated that the installation aims to bring light, energy, and hope, and reflects Wembley Park's connection to music and shared experiences.
It's worth noting that this isn't the first time Wembley Park has commissioned a public art piece to commemorate a landmark run of shows. Previously, the Auras mural was created to celebrate Taylor Swift's residency.
Yellow 25 is more than just a public art piece; it's a testament to the power of music and art to bring people together and create lasting memories. As Coldplay embarks on their record-breaking 10-night run of shows at Wembley Stadium from August 22, the installation serves as a fitting prelude to the celebration of one of the most beloved songs in British music history.
