Get ready for a bittersweet goodbye! The iconic Strandbar 54° Nord on Ordinger Strand is being torn down. "It's a sentimental farewell, but a crucial move for coastline protection and the future durability of our thriving vacation spot," beams Tourism Director of St. Peter-Ording, Katharina Schirmbeck.

The full demolition of this cherished beachside eatery was mandated by the Landesbetrieb für Küsten- und Nationalpark Service Schleswig-Holstein (LKN) and the National Park Wattenmeer. Previous announcements from the Tourism Center also highlighted that the takedown was essential for safety concerns.

Iconic Building with Historical Significance

The timber-built establishment stands permanently submerged at high tide, causing structural instability.

Earlier reports hinted at plans for a commemorative event to celebrate the building's many admirers, who hold it in high regard due to its cultural significance: 54 pilings from the pier and the substantial wooden structure beneath the building will be retrieved, stored, and put up for auction at a later date.

Strandbar finds new inland abode

"This timber construction has left an indelible mark on our local culture—as a popular hangout, photographic backdrop, and bearer of countless memories," says Schirmbeck. "All the more reason, we're excited that the spirit of the old Strandbar will endure at a new location."

In the future, residents and tourists will not need to go without an observation platform fitted with gastronomic delights. Strandbar 54° Nord will find solace 250 meters inland.

Pile-dwellings are the essence of St. Peter-Ording

Pile-dwellings have been a characteristic feature of St. Peter-Ording for over a century. These wooden houses on stilts are not only a proud symbol of our town but also a rare find along the German coast, according to the Tourism Center. There are pile-dwellings at every beach segment of the town.
