Celebration of the world's initial test-tube elephant on World Elephant Day marks a significant milestone in Turkey
In the heart of Turkey, the Gaziantep Wildlife Park played host to a special celebration on August 12, 2025 - World Elephant Day. The park, renowned for its vast expanse and diverse species, was the home to Gabi, the world's first test-tube Asian elephant, who turned 18 this year.
Gabi, an endangered Asian elephant, has been living at the park since she was just five years old. She received meticulous care, as confirmed by park director Celal Ozsoyler, and was treated to a special feast on this momentous day. The menu included bananas, tomatoes, pineapples, various types of squash, and red peppers, all of which Gabi appeared to enjoy.
World Elephant Day was established in 2012 to draw attention to the declining population of elephants, which are listed as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). The number of Asian elephants in the wild is approximately 35,000 to 40,000, making their protection vital.
Efforts are underway to find a mate for Gabi, with the zoo in contact with wildlife parks abroad. However, as of August 2025, there is no publicly documented update on mating efforts specifically for Gabi.
Visitors gathered to watch Gabi enjoy her special day, their hearts filled with hope for the future of this remarkable creature.
