Cartier's significant new display debuts at the V&A, showcasing a sparkling treasure trove
The Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) in London is set to host an unparalleled retrospective exhibition on the prestigious Maison Cartier, opening on April 12, 2025. This grand event promises to be a captivating journey through the history, craftsmanship, and iconic designs of the renowned brand.
The exhibition, titled 'Cartier', showcases over 350 meticulously selected pieces, including glittering tiaras worn by royalty, emblematic creations, and other exquisite jewellery that trace the brand’s evolution from its inception in 1847 to its current global prominence. The exhibit is divided into three main sections, focusing on design, craftsmanship, materials, and Cartier’s signature motifs and references.
The first section, 'Cartier's Creativity and Inspiration', delves into the brand's roots, exploring the sources of its inspiration and the innovative ideas that shaped its designs. The second section, 'The Cartier Workshops', offers a behind-the-scenes look at the technical prowess and skill that goes into creating these masterpieces. The final section, 'The Shaping of a Now-Iconic Image', showcases the brand's transformation into the iconic luxury powerhouse it is today.
British architect and artist Asif Khan is responsible for the exhibition design, promising a visually stunning experience. The human adventure of Cartier as a company is a significant focus, with a dedicated section illustrating how clients have contributed to its fame and reputation.
Highlights of the exhibition include the Scroll Tiara, worn by Queen Elizabeth II at her coronation and by Rihanna on the cover of W Magazine in 2016, as well as Grace Kelly's engagement ring from 1956 and a brooch commissioned by Queen Elizabeth II in 1953, featuring the rare 23.6 carat pink Williamson diamond. The exhibition also pays tribute to the actors, musicians, and royalty who have been associated with Cartier over the years.
Pierre Rainero, Cartier's Image, Style, and Heritage Director, emphasises the public's discovery of the works as a key aspect of the exhibition. He is involved in the discussions for the exhibition, ensuring that the brand's essence is accurately represented. It's worth noting that the exhibition does not include any advertisements, focusing solely on the works themselves.
The Cartier exhibition runs from April 12 to November 16, 2025, at the Sainsbury Gallery. This promises to be a dazzling celebration of luxury, innovation, and opulence in jewellery making, not to be missed by any connoisseur or enthusiast. For more information and to book tickets, visit vam.ac.uk.
