EB Games Canada Rises Again: A New Chapter for Canadian Gamers
Canadian return of EB Games: Focus on local community, nostalgia, and advancements
Canadian videogame enthusiasts, listen up! EB Games, a name synonymous with early gaming memories for many, is making a comeback—this time under new ownership. GameStop Canada has been acquired by entrepreneur Stephan Tetrault, a longtime leader in the collectibles and entertainment space, and is set to reemerge as EB Games Canada.
At first glance, this development may seem puzzling in the age of online shopping domination. So, why resurrect a conventional brick-and-mortar store during a digital era? According to Tetrault, "this isn't just a business decision—it's about bringing something back that Canadians truly loved." It's all about community, nostalgia, and innovation, he explains.
Selling video games is increasingly a sideline for retailers these days. So, Tetrault's expertise is more aligned with his roots as the founder and owner of Imports Dragon, a rapidly growing toy company in Canada, and co-owner of McFarlane Toys.
It's somewhat ironic that GameStop hasn't actually been a staple in Canada for too long. While GameStop acquired EB Games in 2005, it continued to operate in the country as EB Games until 2021 when it eventually rebranded. Less than four years later, the old name is making a comeback, and for many, it never truly disappeared.
If you're old enough, you might remember when EB (or GameStop) was an essential part of the PC gaming landscape, before Steam, physical game boxes, and the joy of scouring bargain bins. Although those days are long gone, there's always a sense of nostalgia when spotting the old shingle. And yes, I may drop by for a visit when I'm in town!
