Bottrop's Green Roof Revolution: Co-op Transforms Garages into Oases
A property owners' cooperative in Bottrop has transformed garage roofs, covering over 200 square meters, into a verdant oasis with the help of a 10,000 euro subsidy from the '10,000 Green Roofs' program. The project, initiated by Jürgen Kleine-Natrop and Anna Bobrowski, has been praised for its aesthetic and environmental benefits.
The verdant roof features a variety of sedum plants, such as wall pepper and golden moss, along with native herbs like meadow grass and wild marjoram. These plants help to store rainwater, preventing flooding, and provide cooling through evaporation. They also offer food for insects, contributing to biodiversity.
The project was made possible by the Emschergenossenschaft/Lippeverband, which subsidized the verdant roof. Property owners have up to three years to implement the measure after receiving a funding commitment. Jürgen Kleine-Natrop and Anna Bobrowski encourage other property owners to submit a funding application and green their roofs. Interested parties can apply at any time via the funding portal at www.klima-werk.de/greenroofsubsidy. The '10,000 Green Roofs' program offers a subsidy of 50 euros per square meter of greened roof area, up to 200 square meters per property.
The successful implementation of the verdant roof project in Bottrop demonstrates the potential of such initiatives to enhance urban environments and mitigate the impacts of climate change. With the '10,000 Green Roofs' program offering substantial subsidies, more property owners are encouraged to consider greening their roofs.
