Border Patrol Ex-Agent, Now Author, Pays Campus a Visit
In the heart of the academic year, the College Board played host to a captivating event on February 15, as Francisco Cantú, a renowned author and former border patrol agent, graced the stage as part of the Working Writers Series. The event took place in the Rehm Library.
Francisco Cantú, currently a professor at the University of Arizona and a resident of Tucson, Arizona, captivated the audience with his insights and experiences. He is best known for his acclaimed book, "The Line Becomes a River," and has been featured in esteemed publications such as "This American Life," "The New Yorker," and numerous others.
Born and raised in the West Texas desert, Cantu shared his upbringing, where his family had to drive an hour to reach a grocery store. His unique perspective on the border landscape was a central theme of his talk. He described it as varying from beautiful and ecologically diverse to desolate and lonely.
Cantu also discussed the ongoing influence of Manifest Destiny and Wild West mythology on conversations about resolving the border crisis. He shared that his work as a border patrol agent led to bad dreams and a change in his perception of the border landscape.
Apart from his professional life, Cantu revealed his personal preferences. His favorite color is purple, and he is a devoted fan of the Boston Red Sox. When it comes to music, he enjoys "Pound Cake" by Drake, and Coldplay is his favorite singer/group.
Meanwhile, another student, Andrew O'Connor, a Class of 2026 International Studies major from Dedham, MA, was also in the spotlight. O'Connor is a versatile athlete, involved in Gaelic football, IM soccer, and flag football on campus. His favorite movie is La La Land, and he has a diverse taste in music, with Coldplay being one of his favourites.
As for campus life updates, as of March 11th, changes went into effect on Eventbrite that allow students to order ahead at more dining locations on campus, including the 1843 Grill and Café Babel.
Oliver de la Paz, a current professor at the college, was highlighted in the first event of the spring semester's Working Writers Series. The series continues to bring inspiring figures from the literary world to the College, providing students with valuable insights and experiences.
