Bells within Sögestraße, Bremen, sound daily once more

Carillon in Soegestrasse sounds off once more on September 13th, echoing after a 30-year silence to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the bronze sculpture 'Herdsman with pigs.' The silence was due to the carillon being out of commission for over three decades.

In the heart of Bremen, the carillon at Sögestraße 70, a symbol of peace and freedom, has once again begun to chime after a 30-year silence. The restoration of this historic carillon was a collaborative effort involving local government authorities, cultural organizations, restoration specialists, and community groups.

The carillon, which was installed in 1948 immediately after the war, was chosen as a symbol of hope and renewal during its installation. It now rings daily from 12:00 to 20:00 every half hour, adding a melodious touch to the city's rhythm.

The statue of the pig herdsman, a location where pigs were driven to market in the Middle Ages, stands alongside the carillon. The bronze sculpture, known as "Herdsman with Pigs," is a significant symbol in the city, along with city musicians Roland and the town hall.

The "pigs" in the sculpture have been a popular photo opportunity for generations, and the phrase "Meet at the pigs" is a common expression in Bremen, according to Oliver Rau, head of marketing and tourism at WFB.

The carillon's restoration required a year-long process and approximately 10,000 euros. KSM Immobilien GmbH, the owner of Sögestraße 70, Mrs. Keunecke, Hoefert Elektro, the local office (Beirat Mitte), the trade supervision, the state office for monument protection, and the Senator for Building, Mobility, and Urban Development were among the key parties involved in the project.

The initiative to revive the carillon in Sögestraße was led by CS City-Service GmbH, BID Sögestraße, and the Senator for Economy, Harbors, and Transformation. The restoration was mainly carried out by Herforder Elektromotoren-Werke and Glockenläute- und Turmuhren-Systeme Gravermann.

Bremen now boasts two historic carillons, the other being in Böttcherstraße, made of Meissen porcelain. The larger and more stable carillon in Sögestraße adds a unique charm to the city's architectural landscape. The statue and carillon will continue to be celebrated with the merchant's table, a tradition that highlights the city's rich history and cultural heritage.

Real estate entrepreneur Marco Bremermann spoke at the event, expressing his joy at hearing the carillon ring again. The return of the carillon to Sögestraße is not just a restoration of a historical artifact, but a revival of a symbol that embodies the spirit of hope, peace, and renewal in the city of Bremen.

The carillon in Sögestraße, having undergone a collaboration-led restoration, now returns to add melodies to the city's rhythm, serving as a reminder of hope and renewal. Meanwhile, the home-and-garden magazine can feature stories about the lifestyle transformation of Sögestraße 70, the property owned by KSM Immobilien GmbH, now surrounded by a unique charm given by the historic carillon.
