Before the commencement, Cranger Carmes declared: "The grandest folk festival in North Rhine-Westphalia"
Herne's Cranger Kirmes Returns After Two-Year Hiatus
After a two-year absence due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Herne's much-anticipated Cranger Kirmes is set to make a triumphant comeback this year. Known as the "Elixir of Life of the Ruhr area," this annual folk festival is the largest of its kind in North Rhine-Westphalia.
The festival, which will run from July 31st to August 10th, will feature two fireworks displays on August 1st and August 10th. The opening ceremony will take place in the festival tent, with Mayor Frank Dudda (SPD) performing the traditional tapping of the keg on August 1st.
The Cranger Kirmes will offer more than 500 attractions, including game booths, sales stands, and a variety of musical programs and parties. Alongside these, there will be over 50 rides, such as high swings, ghost trains, looping swings, bumper cars, Ferris wheels, and even a new roller coaster.
In addition to the rides and attractions, special events like a children's afternoon, senior's afternoon, and a family day have been planned. The festivities will also include a parade, a "party mile," on August 2nd, leading to the fairgrounds by the Rhein-Herne Canal.
The launch site for the fireworks in Herne is on non-public land and will be fully cordoned off for spectators. To ensure safety, all launch devices will be thoroughly inspected. Despite an incident at the Düsseldorf Rhine Festival, the fireworks displays in Herne will still proceed. The fireworks will not be launched from the fairgrounds but from the opposite side of the Rhein-Herne Canal.
The city of Herne expects around four million visitors from across Germany for the Cranger Kirmes. This year's musical guest star is Maite Kelly.
While there are no detailed schedules or event programs available for Cranger Kirmes 2021 due to the cancellation, the event restarted in 2024 with full programming and expectations of millions of visitors. For the most accurate and current information, events from 2024 or 2025 would provide the best available insight.
The city has reviewed their safety concept in response to the incident at the Düsseldorf Rhine Festival, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for all attendees. So, mark your calendars, and get ready to experience the magic of the Cranger Kirmes once again!
