Autumn Cherry Tree Care: Whitewashing, Fertilizing, and Pruning for Winter

Autumn is here, and it's time to care for your cherry trees. October brings the task of whitewashing trunks and branches to protect them from sunburn and sudden temperature changes. After fruiting season, clean the soil, remove weeds, and aerate the soil around the base of the trees. As the first frosts arrive, treat the trees with a 5% urea solution to destroy overwintering pests and fungal spores.

In September or October, enrich your cherry trees with a final fertilization using a specialized fruit tree fertilizer like Cuxin. This strengthens the roots and prepares them for winter. Water the trees to maintain soil moisture and help them prepare for the cold season. Whitewashing also helps prevent cracking and infection penetration in the bark. Seal cracks and wounds with varnish and disinfect them to keep infections at bay.

Prune damaged and diseased branches to reduce infection risk. Treat the cuts with garden varnish. To strengthen roots and increase resistance to winter stress, fertilize with phosphorus-potassium fertilizers. Avoid using nitrogen fertilizers in the fall to prevent stimulating shoot growth before cold weather.

By following these autumn care tips, you'll help your cherry trees withstand the winter months and ensure a healthy start to the next growing season. Protect the bark, strengthen the roots, and maintain a clean and healthy environment around the base of the trees.
