Soaking Up "End Times" Chats on Spiekeroog's Sandbar: Constanze Klar's Artistic Hangout

Art's got a serious side-chill, y'all! Berlin-based artist, Constanze Klar (45), is whipping up a temporary beach shack on Spiekeroog island's coastline for some deep dives into societal turmoil. Why the worry, you ask? "People these days barely talk, and it's hard to swallow different opinions, especially post-Corona," Klar spilled to the German Press Agency.
Sound familiar? You're not the only one feeling the disconnect. Klar believes this temporary beachwatering hole, or as she puts it, the "end of the f. world," is the perfect place for marginalized conversations between vacationers and locals alike.
Klar snagged the Spiekeroog Tent Pitch Residency, a yearly art award dished out by the island for projects addressing social or ecological issues. So, she's settling into her digs in the dunes, three kilometers from the village, till early July.
People hating on people... Sinister vibes, political quagmires... Klar's island bar digs are dripping with tension, grabbing a seat alongside the heated debates brewing across Germany. "The German political climate is looking grim, straight-up apocalyptic," Klar says, citing fears of a right-wing shift following the union's migration policy vote backed by the AfD back in January. Klar's got her eye on social divisions, too – where it's easy to be left out or devalued by the powers that be.
With the guests' permission, Klar records bar chats, planning to craft an animation using clay figures inspired by these recordings. She'll premiere this at the beginning of July on the island.
