Art Presented at Four Cultural Institutions Gets Showcased at JFK Airport, New York

In an exciting development, New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) is set to unveil a new Terminal 6, which will become a cultural hub for travelers, showcasing a diverse range of art installations from renowned institutions and local artists.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, in collaboration with JFK Millennium Partners (JMP), is investing $4.2 billion in this ambitious project. A significant portion of this budget, $22 million, is earmarked for a public art program that aims to capture the city's diversity, energy, and creative spirit[1][4][5].

Permanent and Rotating Art Exhibitions

The Public Art Fund will curate 19 major permanent installations by 18 internationally and New York-based artists, including Barbara Kruger, Charles Gaines, Eddie Martinez, Laure Prouvost, and Haegue Yang[4]. The Jamaica Center for Arts and Learning, on the other hand, will curate a rotating showcase of local artists, providing a dynamic platform for community engagement and highlighting regional talent[1][4].

Collaborations with Cultural Institutions

Terminal 6 will also feature major installations from the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), the Metropolitan Museum of Art (the Met), the American Museum of Natural History, and Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts[1][2][3][4][5].

  • MoMA is collaborating with artist Yoko Ono to present an installation inspired by her 2019 work Peace is Power.
  • Lincoln Center is expected to contribute a 140-foot mural reflecting its cultural offerings across music, theater, dance, and opera.
  • The Met will showcase a range of works representing its 17 curatorial collections across 5,000 years, including photographs of pieces like the Unicorn Tapestry and a Dior bar suit from the Costume Institute.
  • The American Museum of Natural History will contribute an installation that incorporates its notable research and scientific collections.

A Unique Cultural Encounter

The curated artworks are designed to offer travelers a unique, immersive cultural encounter that reflects New York City’s artistic richness and serves as an inspirational welcome or farewell[1][2][3][4][5]. The art is prominently displayed, especially in the arrivals corridor, which is referred to as "museum row".

The Terminal's Key Features

The 1.2 million-square-foot terminal will include 10 new gates and is expected to create about 4,000 jobs[1]. More than a dozen domestic and international airlines, including ANA, Avianca, Cathay Pacific, JetBlue, Lufthansa, and Swiss, will run out of the terminal.

The first six gates of the terminal are slated to open this year, with the remaining four due to be completed by 2028[1]. However, the collaboration does not specify a date for the completion or opening of the new Terminal 6.

These installations, revealed when the first phase of Terminal 6 opens in 2026, are part of the Port Authority’s larger $19 billion JFK transformation plan, aiming to blend world-class architecture, technology, retail, dining, and cutting-edge public art for an elevated passenger experience[1].
