Durham Book Festival 2021: A Celebration of Literature and Art
The Durham Book Festival, a four-day literary extravaganza, is set to return from 10 - 13 October. This year's event, produced by New Writing North and supported by Durham County Council, Arts Council England, and Durham University, promises a rich tapestry of literary delights.
The festival will shine a spotlight on new Scottish writing, with a strong emphasis on emerging voices from North of the border. Well-known non-fiction writers such as Anne Sebba, Kate Summerscale, and Lucy Hughes-Hallett will be among the notable participants. The festival will also embrace diverse genres, including poetry, fiction, and crime writing, with Joffe Books promoting crime writing through bursaries for up-and-coming writers.
Poetry enthusiasts will be delighted to know that daily afternoon poetry sessions are on the agenda, and the festival will host the Forward Prizes for Poetry for the first time. The shortlist for this prestigious award can be found on the Durham Book Festival website.
The festival will also delve into environmental issues with an environmental strand titled "Change the Stories." This segment aims to inspire and provoke thought about our relationship with the natural world.
Among the headliners is Helen Fielding, author of the multi-million selling phenomenon Bridget Jones's Diary. Other notable attendees include American author Jodi Picoult, known for writing 30 books and selling 40 million copies, who will discuss her latest historical novel, By Any Other Name.
Durham alumna and New York Times best-selling author Lucy Foley will also be in attendance, along with Mathew Blake, another Durham graduate, who will discuss his debut novel. Terry Deary, creator of Horrible Histories, will present his first book for adults at the festival.
In addition, Professor of Theology, Revd Professor David Wilkinson, will give a talk on God and Cosmology, and Professor Edith Hall from the Department of Classics and Ancient History will speak on her book, Edith Hall: Facing Down the Furies.
A special association with Live Theatre will see an exclusive dramatic reading of Pat Barker's new novel The Voyage Home. The festival will also continue its tradition of championing Northern talent, with a focus on showcasing local authors and artists.
To top it all off, Durham Libraries will distribute 500 copies of the picture book I am Brave by Caryl Hart and Zoe Waring for this year's Little Read.
The Durham Book Festival 2021 is shaping up to be an unmissable event for literature lovers, offering a diverse range of authors, genres, and topics. For more information and the latest updates, visit the Durham Book Festival website.
