Approximately 25% of its population is open to embracing solar energy on their own balconies, according to a recent survey by comparison portal Verivox[1]. And guess what? This number has been rapidly increasing, with 780,000 balcony solar systems already installed by late 2024[2], generating approximately 700 megawatts of renewable energy for the nation[2].

These systems are primarily designed to fit the needs of apartment dwellers and renters who often lack the space for traditional rooftop solar panels. This simplicity, coupled with supportive government programs like the SolarPLUS scheme, has made them increasingly accessible. Renters can receive up to €500 to aid in the installation costs[2], thereby opening the market to a wider audience.

Harvesting Sunlight from a Balcony: Is Your Space Eligible?

Of the respondents surveyed by Verivox in March 2023, around 19% expressed no interest in having a solar panel for their balcony[1]. 15% deemed it not worth the investment, while 19% remained undecided. Interestingly, 21% of respondents stated they had no space to accommodate a balcony solar system[1]. However, the potential benefits are substantial.

Under ideal conditions, a 800-watt balcony power plant can produce approximately 760 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity annually[1]. If 60% of this energy is consumed, it results in a savings of approximately €160 per year given an average kWh cost of €34.7 cents[1]. Despite this promising return, the success of the system depends significantly on its location.

Optimizing Balcony Solar Energy: The Effect of Orientation

Placing solar panels on a south-facing balcony, mounting them at a slight angle, and avoiding shadows on the modules yield the best results. Regrettably, those with north-facing balconies and vertical installation may only produce one-third of the optimal yield[1]. However, investing in such technology still makes sense, according to energy expert Thorsten Storck of Verivox, as balcony solar panels can be profitable even in suboptimal conditions[1].

Germany's enthusiastic adoption of balcony solar demonstrates the nation's commitment to renewable energy sources. With supportive government policies, a steadily growing market, and the potential for significant energy savings, this trend is likely to persist.
